ABSTRACT

The major epidemics such as human immunodeficiency and hepatitis C viruses coincide, temporarily, in recent human history, that is the reason why the purpose of this investigation was to characterize coinfection between both virus in patients from the community, the sanitarium and the prison of our province, between the years 2004 -2007. 369 subjects with human immunodeficiency virus were studied, 65 (17,6 %) of them were coinfected with hepatitis C virus. It was proved that coinfection proportion was not different in residence places, although, descriptively, there was a greater proportion in the sanitarium. The highest number of patients were between 35 and 44 years of age (27,8 %). There were no significant differences of coinfection according to sex. Sexual orientation in the 32,1 % of the coinfected patients was bisexual, followed by homosexual patients, who resulted statistically significant.
