ABSTRACT

Introduction.Shaken Baby Syndrome is a term currently used to describe head trauma violently inflicted to infants and children characterized by repeated acceleration and deceleration movements. The classic clinical triad currently used to describe this syndrome consists of retinal hemorrhage, retinoschisis and altered neurological state. The goal of the present study is to demonstrate that the presence of the before mentioned triad is not pathognomonic of this syndrome.
Case presentation. We present the cases of 4 children in which ophthalmologic examination confirmed the presence of the triad typically described for Shaken Baby Syndrome. Medical outcome of the patients are also presented.
Discussion. All the patients presented the before described typical triad, none the less the context in which the trauma occurred was different in all cases. In addition to this, case number 4 cannot be included in the age group described for Shaken Baby Syndrome. Taking into consideration that the trauma mechanism was acceleration in the 4 cases, we propose to name this ophthalmologic condition retinopathy caused by trauma with acceleration, corresponding with the kinetic of the trauma mechanism instead of the context in which occurred.
