ABSTRACT

Background: Medical practice is also influenced by changes occurring in the socio-political environment. Bioethics creates space for reflection about problems that could arise in the professional practice of health sciences.
Objective: To assess the general health conditions of health care staffworking in nephrology.
Material and method: An observational study was done applying Goldberg’s General Health Questionnaire to participants in the 2011 Congress of the Mexican Institute of Nephrologic Research (IMIN). The questionnaire contains thirty items to be answered each one with four possible options. One hundred formats were distributed and 85 filled out and collected. This questionnaire is used for studies on mental illness prevalence. It allows knowing whether a subject has psychiatric symptomatology that requires professional assessment.
Results: Cases that are considered as requiring a professional assessment are those with 7 or more positive score items. Average age was 37 years, 55% women, 71% involved in clinical work, 17% in research and 12% in both. Eight cases (six male and two female, between 21 and 44 years old) were found requiring professional attention, with a range of 10 to 18 positive items. A female case was observed at the borderline score for diagnosis with six positive items.
Conclusions: Health care providers do not always take care of their health. If one out of ten attendants to IMIN requires professional attention, shows that insistence is required in health campaigns to comply with the motto “Physician, heal yourself”, to have a better life quality.
