ABSTRACT

Transthoracic needle biopsy has manteined over the past three decades as the invasive procedure of choice for the diagnostic evaluation of thoracic pathology. The technique has proved extremely accuracy in the diagnosis of malignancy, particularly when modern cytopathologic techiques are used in the evaluation of aspirated specimens. With the advent of cross-sectional imaging using CT, the aplications of transtoracic needle biopsy have expanded to the diagnosis of mediastinal, hiliar, chest wall and pleural lesions. This articule focuses on the indications and contraiondications for biopsy, the prebiopsy, transbipopsy and postbiopsy evaluation and patients care issues and the tecnique of the procedure.
