Surface quality with different polishing methods in glass ionomer and composite resin material

ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to evaluate three different polishing methods on two dental materials. Sof-Lex disks, tungsten carbide polishing burs and Arkansas stones ere used on composite resin material and glass ionomer. All of the materials were used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
78 samples were made, 39 composite resin material and 39 glass ionomer. Of each group six samples (three of each material) were used for pilot testing and twelve (six of each material) were kept for reference. For this study 30 samples of each material were tested. The obtained surfaces of each method were evaluated with a surface analyzer and the results were compared with those of reference; six obtained with Mylar strips and six obtained by friction with grain 180 sandpaper.
After the Anova statistical analysis it is shown that the use of Sof-Lex discs had the best results.
