ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analize the morphology and chemical composition of PRODENT gutta-percha cones by SEM and EDX. We included at random 12 gutta-percha cones from differents sizes and lots; which they were studied from D1 to the D16. Six of these cones were used for the morphology and the others for the microanalysis studies, that were carried out in the external and internal structure. The evaluation of the morphology showed a high degree of regularities in the studied areas. The microanalyses showed that the external layer is constituted by nine elements and the internal structure of 11 elements. It was found that depending on the diameter of the cones, variability existed in the elements contents, among which they stand out zinc, oxygen, barium and sodium. Based on the conditions of this study it was concluded that the use of the PRODENT gutta-percha offers satisfactory morphology and chemical composition. And is reliable for the clinical use.
