Key words:

minimycetoma, atypical mycetoma, frequency.

ABSTRACT

Background: Minimycetomas are small, atypical mycetomas, without volume increase, and a slow growth with one or few fistulas and without involving the subjacent structures.
Objectives: To determine the frequency of the minimycetomas to report the epidemiology and their clinical and mycological aspects.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed from 1981 to 2008 (28 years ) at the Centro de Referencia en Micología (Ceremi), Instituto Dermatológico de Jalisco “Dr. José Barba Rubio”.
Results: We found 24 minimycetomas, of which trunck was the body part most commonly affected (42.66%). Out of 62.5% of the cases had one to two years history of presenting the typical clinical features; 92% yielded positive in a direct exam, and 54.15% a positive culture. In 92% the ethiological agent was Nocardia sp.
Conclusions: Minimycetoma has a rare clinical presentation, and awareness of the clinical and microbiological aspects is needed to have an accurate diagnosis and to offer the right treatment. To our knowledge, this is the largest number of reported cases in Mexico.
