ABSTRACT

Background: Onycholysis is a frequent nail disease and it is important to understand its causes.
Objectives: To report onycholysis’ clinical experience.
Methods: We carried out a transversal, prospective study to find out the frequency of onycholysis in 50 patients from the Internal Medicine and Surgery Services of the Hospital General de Enfermedades IGSS. Neither age nor sex nor disease that caused hospitalization were used as criteria for the inclusion of a patient in the study, which took place during August 2009. We performed dermatological examination on finger and toenails to all patients exclusively looking for the presence of onycholysis.
Results: 50 from 170 hospitalized patients were studied, 32 patients were male (64%) and 18 (36%) females. Onycholysis in toenails was predominant —it was found on 32 patients (64%) with 41 onycholysis, while fingernails appeared on 18 cases (36%). The most frequent cause of onycholysis in toenail was onychomycosis in 29 cases (58%), followed by trauma with 7 cases (14%), overriding toe, crossover toe, overlapping toe, pincer nail and drug reaction, with 1 case each (2%) respectively, and in fingernails due to trauma, with 18 cases (36%).
Conclusions: Onycholysis is a common nail disease in the population studied (29.41%) and toenail was given by the most frequent cause is onychomycosis (58%), and in fingernail due to trauma.
