ABSTRACT

Objective: to identify the epidemiological profiles of donors and receptors in corneal transplantation at the eye bank of "Ramon Pando Ferrer" Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology in 2012.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study of the total number of donors registered in the eye bank and the transplanted patients during 2012 at "Ramon Pando Ferrer" Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology. Age, sex, donor center and cause of death were the considered data for donors whereas age, sex, diagnosis and surgical technique were those of the receiver. All this information was collected from the eye bank's databases.
Results: five hundred and ninety donors were received (1 175 corneas) where 51- 70 age group and males predominated. The main cause of death was cardiovascular disease (171) followed by cerebrovascular ones (146). Two hundred and seventy corneal transplantations were analyzed with 51 to 70 years-old patients and males prevailing. Pseudophakic keratopathy bulosa (100), graft rejection (33) and corneal leukomas (29) were the main indications and the most used surgical techniques were penetrating keratoplasty (183) and endokeratoplasty (72).
Conclusions: the most common cause of death for donors was cardiovascular disease; 51-70 age group and males prevailed. Keratoplasty bulosa was the main prescription and penetrating keratoplasty was the most common surgical technique.
