Shape of the dental arches in patients treated at the Multidisciplinary Clinic Zaragoza

ABSTRACT

There is considerable variety in shape and size of the dental arches, between different groups. Among the most common forms that have been investigated are included: the ellipse, the parabola and the catenary curve. This suggested three ways to classify arch dentition in patients: a) narrow or triangular arches, b) square, c) conical. The purpose of this study is to determine the shape of the dental arches, describe the difference between male and female populations, and the provision of occlusal harmony in a population of patients attending the Multidisciplinary Clinic Zaragoza. We performed an observational, prolective, cross sectional study which included 75 models of study of orthodontic patients. In which in the distance and intermolar intercanine dividers were measured with a dry and placed a pre-established template to determine the dental arch, according to Angle class molars. In the superior arches 64% of patients had a square shape while 13.3% had a triangular shape and 22.7% the ovoid shape. For the lower arch 46.7% average measures were oval, square and triangular 42% and 12% respectively. The predominant form of the arch for this ethnic group was the square. Occlusal harmony of the population is the result of an arch form and physiological changes that occur with cross-development.
