Key words:

Cottle’s areas, nasal obstruction, septum deviation, nose and paranasal sinuses tomography.

ABSTRACT

Background: Clinical classification of nasal septum deviations is classically done using the areas proposed by Cottle, who divides nasal septum according to anatomical elements and also by physiological considerations taking into account the sites of resistance of air flow during inspiration (valve) and expiration (vestibule). In international literature is not found clearly the tomographic evaluation of nose and paranasal sinuses using topographical classification of Cottle areas.
Objective: To do the clinical and image correlation of Cottle’s areas in septum deviations.
Material and Method: And observational, cross-sectional, analytical study was done from March to July 2012 at General Hospital of National Medical Center La Raza, Mexico City, including patients with anatomical septum disorders of kind of deviation. Statistical analysis included central tendency measures, dispersion and frequency of dates measures, evaluation of septal deviations and the determination of association was done using a correlation test and χ2.
Results: Associations between physical exploration of nose and tomographic results were found statistically significant with p<0.05 in the Cottle’s areas I, II , IV y V, but not in the valvular II and attic III areas.
Conclusions: Cottle’s areas II-IV that clinically produce more disorders of nasal obstruction associated with radiological description and with the scale of respiratory difficulty.
