ABSTRACT
In recent years, the number of Internet-based communications sites has increased exponentially. Commonly known as social networking sites, these portals enable virtual interaction between their users. In 2008, the most successful social network aimed at the scientific community was created: ResearchGate. Among the users of RG are many college professors and researchers in the area of oral health sciences in Mexico. The aim of this paper is to familiarize readers with the ResearchGate website and facilitate its use by dentists and dental students. Some of the most important functions of the ResearchGate website include: to encourage contact and collaboration among colleagues, to share publications, to provide the opportunity to ask and respond to questions, to post and help users find opportunities for scientific work, and to establish a new means of measuring scientific reputation (i.e., the ResearchGate score). We therefore consider this social networking site to be one of significant value to oral health professionals and health science practitioners.
