Fobia social: un fenómeno incapacitante

ABSTRACT

This research about social phobia was conducted by a nonprobabilistic sample with 381 college students, of different public and private institutions of superior education. Both sexes, different courses and semesters were considerated. An instrument was elaborated to differentiate social phobia from general anxiety, and other phobias. The confiability shows a Cronbach’s Alpha of .879, and the validity obtained with factorial analisis was of 51.309%, it represents five factors after analyzed. The results were associated with a poor school performance on high school, fear and sweating and to the different location where institutions were found. As for social phobia in school, men presented more symptoms than women; on the other side women presented more rational fears and animal phobias compared to men. Students from UNAM had more symptoms like sweating and fear, and also rational fears, compared to the other students. Finally, the students that had attend to previous psychological treatment are more likely to present social phobia that those who didn’t.
