ABSTRACT

Obesity is defined as an abnormal and excessive accumulation of fat; it is usually measured using the body mass index (BMI). Obesity is a worldwide public health problem. In Mexico, overweight and obesity are extremely severe problems. Microarrays allow us to study in a general way expression patterns of genes and their participation in complex illnesses. Microarray expression patterns from adipose tissue of different populations have led us to know many processes that now can be related to the development of certain clinical outcomes. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the gene expression of adipose visceral tissue from patients with obesity using microarrays. Of all the genes studied with significant differences in the expression were the ones related with carbohydrate metabolism, glycolysis, and gluconeogenesis, as well as eicosanoids synthesis on adipose tissue in obese patients versus patients with no obesity. Genes with alterations in the expression levels were evaluated and analyzed to correlate them with Mexican population. These results will contribute in the research of new markers in Mexican population that will help on the study of this pathology.
