ABSTRACT

Introduction: No information is available on surgery for non-traumatic diseases of the neck performed by the average general surgeon in our country.
Objective: To present data on surgery of the neck for non-traumatic diseases in an average general hospital.
Design: Retrospective, longitudinal, descriptive, noncomparative study, descriptive-survey type.
Setting: Second level general hospital.
Material and Methods: We reviewed the surgical procedures for non-traumatic neck diseases performed from 1994 to 2003. We analyzed demographic data and the type of surgical procedure.
Results: We found 619 patients-procedures; 51.5% men and 48.5% women, average age of 40.3 years. Thyroidectomy, lymph node biopsy, tumoral biopsy at different sites, excision of salivary glands and congenital cysts, were the most frequent surgical procedures.
Conclusion: The general surgeon, especially the recently graduated from the residence, must be prepared for the described procedures.
