Perception of medical residents about the patient safety culture by sector and size of hospital units

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In Mexico, the measurement of the quality of patient safety in the hospital, allows us to know the situation of the perception of safety, and based at the results to identify the situations that have an impact on patient safety and how to implement strategies to improve it. The objective of the study was to know the perception of the residents of the National Health System about the culture of patient safety in the hospital.
Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, analytical and descriptive study based on the results of an online survey of 42 questions, organized in 12 dimensions of the culture of patient safety, applied to 2500 medical residents of 78 medical specialties, assigned to public and private hospital units of the National Health System.
Results: The overall security index perceived by residents reached an average of 7.95 in the private sector and 6.89 in the public sector, being PEMEX stood out with a favorable average of 7.6 and the ISSSTE with an unfavorable average of 6.57. In hospitals with a range of more than 500 beds, the level of work enviroment is more vulnerable.
Conclusion: The greatest strength in both sectors was "team work" and "Organizational learning and continuous improvement", and as the greatest weakness was the "non-punitive response to errors" and "staffing", to despite the notable differences in the score received.
