ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the impact on life quality of chronic venous insufficiency.
Setting: Regiongal hospital “Lic. Adolfo López ateos”. ISSSTE.
Design: Prospective, observational, comparative study.
Statistics: Descriptive and inferential.
Methods: We evaluated 112 patients; divided in two groups: Healthy individuals (G-I) and carriers of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI, G-II). We used the 36-item short form health survey to assess quality of life. This scale explores eight health concepts: physical performance, social performance, limitations of the physical role, limitations of the emotional role, mental health, vitality, pain, and general health perception. The score goes from 0 to 100, in each domain, the highest scores are the ones related with a better quality of life.
Results: Sample was 112 patients; 33% men and 67% women, average age 45.7 years; healthy individuals, 43; CVI carriers, 69. Scores were for G-I (in average): physical performance, 92.56; social performance, 81.74; limitations in the physical role, 88.15; limitations in the social role, 85.18; mental health, 75.94; vitality, 76.23; pain 80.98; general perception of health, 82.48. For G-II (in average) physical performance, 55.78; social performance, 65.93; limitation in the physical role, 44.52; limitations in the emotional role, 70.20; mental health 65.22; vitality, 54.65; pain, 46.63; general perception of health, 46.62. Inferred statistics: comparison of the results from the diverse domains between healthy individuals and CVI carriers revealed a statistically significant difference in the eight domains explored by the 36-item short form health survey (p ‹ 0.05). Conclusions: There is a significant deterioration in life quality in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.
