ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe three cases of heterotopic ossification in the surgical wound after laparotomy.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Description of the cases: Three male patients, aged 24, 37, and 42 years, with a previous laparotomy due to Nissen-type fundoplication in one and necrosectomy due to acute severe pancreatitis in the other two patients, the first with a supraumbilical medial surgical scar and the other two with scars due to high abdominal transversal wounds. In the three, clinical data revealed pain at the wound site and palpation of a mass below the scar. Plain abdominal X ray showed in the first patient a zone with multiple radiopaque points at the surgical wound: the second patient was diagnosed with post-incisional hernia at the left end of the transversal scar, a 4 x 2 cm indurated zone was found during re-operation and was resected; in the third patient, the plain abdominal X ray revealed radiopaque regions of bony characteristics at the surgical wound. The lesion was resected in the three patients and they have evolved satisfactorily.
Conclusion: Heterotopic ossification is a lesion that can occur at the site of the scar from laparotomy surgical wounds.
