Corporal image perception, body weight index and overweight in university students from the southeast

ABSTRACT

Aim. To know the body image perception of university students, with special interest in overweight and obesity.
Material and methods. The subjects were 351 infirmary students. In a first stage an inquire was done in 281; using 9 silhouettes the students identified it’s own image and recorder it’s weight and height. In the second stage 71 were weighted and measured.
Results. With the data of the inquire the BMI was 23.68 ± 3.99 kg/m2 and with the measurements was 24.30 ± 4.68 kg/m2. According to the inquire 61 (21.8%) students had overweight and 19 (6.8%) were obese; with the measurements 11 (15.5%) were overweight and 9 (12.7%) obese.
Conclusions. The body mass index calculated by the weight and height given by the students could be used for to stimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
