Objective: Description of a case and review of the basic concepts on cystic tumors of the pancreas. Setting: Regional general hospital, second level health care. Design: Description of a case. Description: Man of 46 years of age with a 2-years history of high abdominal pain, associated to abdominal distention and postprandial filling, without pancreatitis antecedents. Physical exploration revealed a growth in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen. The ultrasonogram revealed an echolucent bilobulated tumor of 51 x 65 and 124 x 130 mm in the upper hemiabdomen that was confirmed by CT scanning. Distal pancreatectomy was performed, resecting totally the tumor. The final histopathological diagnosis was of cystic mucinous tumor of the pancreas. Conclusion: Although the mucinous cyst of the pancreas is not frequent, its surgical treatment is indicated.
