ABSTRACT

Introduction: The current work exposes an innovative system for Braille learning. The system’s prototype consists of the translation of the Braille dots from a graphic TV screen representation to a tact sensible board emulating the Braille dots by the movement of coils.
Material and methods: This goal has been achieved by the use of solenoids, which receive the information for operation by analog electronic circuits. Screen information is captured by light sensors. Each sensor corresponds to one of the Braille spots. Afterwards the information is conditioned and calibrated by electronic components that connect to the final solenoids that increase or decrease the dots. The feedback of the system is given by software that graphically shows the alphabet on the screen. Every letter is sensible to the cursor position.
Results: The tactile information on the Braille generator and the auditory feedback by emulation of the letters names, allows the learning person to surf easily through the letters with the mouse.
Conclusions: The system pretends to be a practicable option for Braille learning.

Key words: Low vision, Braille, blind, Braille simulator.
