ABSTRACT

Objective: to argue the need to include geographic content within the training process of doctors, based on the analysis of the object of the profession and the functions that these professionals have to fulfill once they graduate.
Methods: The research started from a theoretical exploration that used documentary analysis as study methods. Normative documents of the medical career, electronic sites and specialized literature on training, professional training, medical training and geographic education were consulted. The information was complemented with scientific observation, in its non-participant and covert variant. Teachers, general practitioners and epidemiologists were observed in medical teaching activities, analysis of the health situation and vector control.
Results: The study allowed the compilation of information to achieve the theoretical support of the research. Interdisciplinary links were identified between medical training and geographical teaching, as well as the potential of the latter for the fulfillment of the functions of the general practitioner. The importance of Geography in contemporary medical training is argued.
Conclusions: The relationships between medical training and geographic teaching have a long history in the training process of these professionals. The training and development of knowledge and skills of Geography facilitate the competent execution of the functions of the doctor and achieve the object of the profession.
