ABSTRACT

Meanings, forms of care, and men’s sexual activity during the first pregnancy were analyzed. A qualitative method was used, specifically, the production and content analysis of written stories. Ten parents from Mexico City and the metropolitan area participated. An instrument was used that requested general data, the elaboration of two-color drawings, and the writing of different stories about their personal experiences and sexual activity during the first or only pregnancy. It was found that the participants: (1) were emotionally influenced in different ways from the news of pregnancy (surprise, worry, fear, confusion, fatigue and stress; or happiness, love, gratitude and hope); (2) provided different care and support in favor of maternal-fetal health (housework, tasks of greater physical effort, promoting a healthy diet to the couple, lavishing affectionate treatment, accompanying her to gynecological-obstetric consultations, taking her to the Birth); and (3) engaged in sexual activity that avoided maternal-fetal harm (reduced frequency and intensity, comfortable sexual positions, tender caresses) which was pleasurable. It was concluded that the range of findings described led to the gradual assimilation of the roles of spouse and father that provide and protect from pregnancy, before delivery, and the birth of the first child.
