ABSTRACT
Introduction: the ostomy unit represents the main care and support center for the ostomate. Its qualities, organization and functions should be adjusted to the needs of the user, nurses and coloproctologists.
Objective: to assess the perception of the members of the Venezuelan Society of Coloproctology (SVCP) on the need for specialized units to manage ostomates.
Material and methods: a prospective, cross-sectional, non-experimental, descriptive and field study was carried out, applying a survey to members of the SVCP.
Results: twenty-six instruments were answered; 96.2% of the participants performed ostomies in 2019; most (38.4%) perform between 1-5 ostomies per year, 38.4% have performed > 100 ostomies during their lifetime, 77% perform most of their ostomies in emergencies, with terminal colostomy (65.3%) (57.7%) being the most performed; 84.6% know the preoperative stoma marking technique, only 27% perform it on a regular basis. The most reported complications were: edema (34.6%), abscesses and parastomal hernias (30.7%); 88.5% consider that an ostomy negatively affects quality of life, 96.2% support training in self-care practices, 100% consider necessary the creation of ostomy units and the training of specialized personnel.
Conclusions: the ostomy unit (OU) is a space to provide guidance and support to ostomates where they have the appropriate supplies; the ostomy nurse (ON) is fundamental for this unit, being a trained staff with empathy for the patient.
Recommendations: create OU in public and private institutions for the multidisciplinary management of ostomates and academic programs for the training of ON.
