ABSTRACT
Introduction: simulated patients (SPs) at Universidad Mayor in Temuco, Chile, were trained in using a tool for the development of realistic clinical simulation cases through PAEPS (Alba Emoting Protocol for Simulated Patients). They learned to portray emotions by modifying their body postures, breathing patterns, and facial expressions. This technique, commonly used in theater, was applied for the first time in simulation through a protocol designed collaboratively with an actor and simulation experts. Following the SPs’ training, a qualitative study was conducted to identify the perception of learning among SPs trained with PAEPS at Universidad Mayor, Temuco campus. Material and methods: this qualitative, phenomenological study collected data through focus groups with six SPs who met the inclusion criteria. Results: three dimensions with two subcategories each were identified. A positive perception of learning using PAEPS was highlighted among the Simulated Patients, with improved confidence in executing scenarios and recognition of “step out” as a facilitator for providing feedback to students and/or repeating the scenario. Additionally, PAEPS was perceived as beneficial for students, for scenario execution itself, and as a facilitator in achieving the learning outcomes proposed by the instructor. Conclusions: clinical simulation requires standardized patients (SPs) to be trained both emotionally and technically to achieve high fidelity. The PAEPS protocol enables the expression of real emotions through the body, enhancing training. This approach promotes ethical commitment and self-care for the SP. It is proposed as a basis for future research in health education.REFERENCES
