ABSTRACT

Objective. To estimate the percentage of school-aged children, adolescents, and adult in Mexico that adheres to the Healthy and Sustainable Dietary Guidelines (HSDG) and to identify the associated sociodemographic characteristics. Materials and methods. With dietary information of 2 500 school-aged children, 1 750 adolescents and 5 174 adults from the semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire from the 2020-2023 Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey, the consumption in servings of food groups and the percentage of the population that met the recommended intake for each analyzed food group at national level and by age group were estimated for fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts and seeds, and total meat consumption and by type. Multiple logistic regression models were conducted to identify sociodemographic characteristics associated with adherence to the recommendations. Results. Compliance for vegetables was ‹30%; nuts and seeds 2-4%; beef meat >50%; legumes ‹1.4% and fruits 45% of school children, 36% of adults and 27% of adolescents. The associated sociodemographic characteristics were well-being conditions index, sex, place of residence, education level, and age, with different directions depending on the age and food group analyzed. Conclusion. The compliance to the HSDG recommendations is low, which reminds the necessarily participation of many governmental sectors to promote them.
