ABSTRACT
Introduction: periodontitis is an inflammatory condition of the periodontal tissues that main a public health problem in México. Structural damage caused by the microbial ecosystem has been liked to the presence of bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, which has been identified as a risk factor for systemic conditions and cognitive decline, including brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia.
Objective: the present review aims to critically examine the literature evidence on the presence of P. gingivalis and its impact on cognitive functions, risk of dementia, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Material and methods: a scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA-ScR methodology. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 were included.
Results: twenty-eight studies were evaluated, of which nine were selected after meeting exclusion criteria.
Conclusions: the relationship between P. gingivalis and neurodegenerative diseases is not conclusive; however, maintaining proper oral hygiene in patients over 60 years of age can prevent the early development of neurodegenerative diseases.
