ABSTRACT
Introduction: regeneration of the dental pulp through the use of stem cells, awaits the preservation of the teeth and in some cases continue with the process of rhizogenesis, apical closure or make internal root tissues. The abundant sources of known stem cells are skin, bone marrow, retina and cells of dental origin.
Objective: to expose what refers to the use of stem cells for pulp regeneration.
Material and methods: a search for relevant information on the use of stem cells in dentistry was carried out in databases such as Medigraphic, SciELO, PubMed, Elsevier and digital books, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results: 43 bibliographic sources were obtained, showing that in vivo and in vitro studies recommend the use of dental pulp cells (DPSC), stem cells from exfoliated human deciduous teeth (SHED) and apical papilla stem cells (SCAP) for pulp regeneration.
Conclusion: it was concluded that, in endodontics for pulp regeneration, stem cells from vital primary teeth or third molars are recommended, which are an abundant source of DPSC, SHED and SCAP, generating a connective tissue type abundant in cells with high capacity proliferative.
