ABSTRACT
Objective: To inform on the experience with anorectal melanoma at our hospital in order to determine its biological behavior, prognosis, most appropriate therapeutic options, and survival.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Patients and methods: We reviewed retrospectively the clinical records of 11 patients with a diagnosis of anorectal melanoma and treated in our hospital from 1992 to 1998. We analyzed the following parameters: age, gender, time of evolution, depth of invasion, tumor size, pigmentation, metastases, treatment, recurrence, and survival.
Results: Patients were diagnosed at advanced stages, average age of 64 years, it predominated in women, and was usually found associated with ganglionic or visceral metastases. Survival was of one patient at 18 months follow-up (9%), and the main adverse prognostic factors were: size of the tumor, depth of invasion, and metastases. The type of treatment did not influence the prognosis due to the advanced stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis.
Conclusion: This is an uncommon neoplasm, with a very aggressive biological behavior, considering it as a systemic disease at the time of diagnosis; treatment did not alter survival.
