ABSTRACT

Research into our history is a need, for national history is not possible without local history. This need for local research, alongside the fact that the authors are professionals committed to the place where they were born, were strong motivations to conduct the present study, whose purpose is to contribute to the rescue of the history of dentistry in the municipality of Quemado de Güines in the province of Villa Clara. The study started with a review about the history of dentistry. The research methods used were the analytic-synthetic and deductive-inductive methods. The main submethod applied was the chronological submethod. Data collection was based on several historical research techniques, such as document review, interviews and surveys. We found that there were no official publications about facts, personalities or the development of dentistry in the municipality. A division is proposed into historical periods, which would cover from the original empirical practitioners and the arrival of professionals to the foundation of the dental clinic. We also found that the first native dental professional settling in the town was Doctor Graciela Roura Pulido (1928). The present paper has contributed to rescue the history of dentistry in Quemado de Güines. For the first time, notes concerning locally relevant names and facts are arranged into historical periods.
