Methodological tool for developing communicative competence in the English language in Cuban medical universities

ABSTRACT

Background: despite the efforts done by the National Board of Medical Teaching, and the teachers of English all over the country, the level of development of communicative competence in this language among the graduates from the Cuban medical universities, is not satisfactory yet.
Objective: to propose a methodological tool in the didactics of foreign languages, that fosters the development of communicative competence in the English language in medical students.
Methods: in a transversal descriptive study done, with a universe of 20 teachers of English and Spanish from the Language Department of the Affiliate of Medical Sciences in Sagua la Grande, Villa Clara, an action research project was done, that allowed to support the above mentioned proposal. The following methods were used: documentary analysis, observation, interviews, questionnaire, survey to teachers of foreign languages, nominal group and triangulation.
Results: the results obtained allowed to propose a methodological tool for the development of communicative competence and its theoretical-methodological foundation. This result was generalized successfully in five medical universities in the country.
Conclusions: the application in the higher medical education in Cuba of the principles and current trends in the communicative teaching of foreign languages, as well as task-based methods of learning, and the instruction based in competences, have allowed the researchers to propose a methodological tool that contributes to the didactics of the teaching of foreign languages, in order to develop the communicative competence in the English language in the professionals of medical sciences.
