ABSTRACT

With the increase in childhood obesity, there has been growing concern in recent years about the psychological impact of the condition on this population. An increase in the frequency of depression, anxiety disorders, and low self-esteem among children with obesity has been found; all leading to a deterioration in quality of life. Associations have been demonstrated between childhood obesity and mental health problems such as depressive symptoms, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and low self-esteem. Children with obesity are also more likely to be victims of discrimination, social isolation and bullying. It is essential to assess the mental health of overweight or obese children and adolescents.
